Should You Drink Water From a Bottle of Chocolate Syrup?

The internet was mesmerized last week when photographs of Tennessee State Representative Kent Kalfi appeared drinking what appeared to be pure Hershey syrup .

Kalfi responded by explaining that he had remade the syrup bottle for drinking plain water. (Obviously, this is not chocolate water.) “One day I was about to send it to be recycled plastic,” explained a lawmaker who cares about recycling, “and I thought, damn it, I could put water in there.”

While it may seem surprising to see an adult drink straight out of the spout of rich, silky goodness, we’re not the type to let a possible hack slip out of our chocolate-covered fingers.

So we took a couple of bottles of chocolate syrup and washed them to see if it was worth drinking. But we didn’t stop there.

After drinking from an empty syrup bottle, we thought, “What other seasoning bottles that can be used as a water bottle?”

We then chose four other options: mustard, salad dressing, soy sauce, and ketchup. We poured out their contents (and left them for later), rinsed and cleaned each vessel, filled it with cold water and began to drink.

So which bottle will quench your thirst best on a hot summer day? Well, for this answer you will need to watch the video above, but we have some notes:

  • The mustard bottle had a very small nozzle that could be a good substitute for small children.
  • If you’re going to use the bottle for salad dressing, use soap to remove any remaining oil so you don’t get a mouthful of vinaigrette.
  • The ketchup bottle was a real experience . The anti-crusting cap essentially makes it super powerful. It may be better to spray water all over the place than relieve dehydration. However, it can be a good joke if you convince someone to try it.
