The New Mozilla Firefox App for Android Currently Only Supports These Extensions

Mozilla is about to remove the nightly beta of its new Firefox for Android browser from the Google Play store, leaving users with only the preview version of Firefox. It’s worth switching from Nightly build to this browser right now or looking at it for the first time, but there is one small catch: There is only one extension currently supported, and many of your favorites may not be migrating to this new version of Firefox.

According to recent announcements from Mozilla , only 97 extensions in Mozilla’s “ Recommended Extensions ” program will be supported by the new Firefox for Android when it eventually arrives in stable. Right now, you’re limited to one in Firefox Preview: uBlock origin . And Mozilla does not promise that extensions not included in the recommended package will be added back to mobile Firefox in the future, although the company says it is open to trying.

What does it mean? If you’ve used extensions in the current version of Firefox for Android, you’ll need to match them against the Mozilla list to see if they appear in the new version of the app coming this spring. Otherwise, you will need to find replacements for these add-ons.

To get started, here are a few of our favorites from the Mozilla list. Start giving them a try now so you will be familiar with them when the next Firefox for Android comes out:

  • Dark Reader – Automatically turns on dark mode, even on some websites that don’t have a dark mode of their own.
  • Decentraleyes – Prevents Google and other companies from collecting your data.
  • Ghostery – Blocks ads and trackers.
  • HTTPS Everywhere – Adds HTTPS encryption to sites that don’t normally have it for a safer browsing experience.
  • NoScript Security Suite – Warns you about potentially malicious web scripts running on a page and lets you control if they run.
  • Privacy Badger – blocks invisible trackers.
  • uBlock OriginBlock ads and other on-screen elements without slowing down device performance or website loading speed.
  • Background Video Playback Fix – Fixes issues that prevent video or sound from playing when Firefox is running in the background.
