To Trim Your Child’s Nails, Clip It Into the Carrier

If you’re struggling to trim your toddler’s nails, you’re not alone. This is a necessary, frequent task that many parents dread. At first, we were so terribly unable to keep the sharp little claws of our little daughter under control that I came for a month’s examination with scissors in hand and begged the nurse and pediatrician to help me; they refused.

When our second child spent some time in the intensive care unit, I again hoped that the super-attentive staff would handle it, but alas, it was the only thing they did not do and will not do. For newborns and sleepers, the problem is easily solved: cut gently while the baby sleeps. But once these rascals become more active and resilient, you can run into real trouble – especially if, like my fourteen-month-old son, your child’s energy level rivals a continuous full-blown tornado.

Out of utter desperation and after a decade of parenting, I finally discovered a trick that saves all of us from looking like a cat has just brought in. To keep these nails beautiful and neat, I have found a flawless nail clipping solution that only takes a few painless minutes.

Secure the tiny tiger cub in the carrier, facing out, and cut it off. While kids can still swing their arms and legs fairly freely, there is something about the full body harness that makes any resistance not only useless, but also very easy to control.

And in my experience with this trick, the child is distracted enough by looking around that this time – ONCE – they don’t care what you do with their fingernails or toenails.
