Stop Lying to Yourself About Your Toilet Brush

When we last collected our staff’s weekly updates , our editors refreshed our clothes with vodka, planned vacations big and small, and welcomed new four-legged friends into our lives.

This week we are cutting back on cleaning hassles, leveraging everything the library has to offer, reducing our digital addiction, and moving away from milkshakes and booze.

What updates have you made this week? Let us know in the comments.

Do not hold onto a toilet brush that you are not going to clean.

I threw away the brush and bought a Clorox toilet. I resigned myself to the fact that I never intended to clean the brush or the rough holder it was in, and that really made me sad. It might be more wasteful and expensive, but being able to just toss the brush head and not deal with the dirt, dripping brush made my bathroom and my life a lot better.

Get your e-books for free

I finally got my NYC library card and was able to download audiobooks to my phone and real books to my Kindle, and I should have done that a long time ago. I will continue to be amazed that we can access almost any book at any time as long as we have an internet connection – everything else in the world is bad, but it is very, very good. (By the way, I used the Libby app that David recently recommended, and it’s great.)

Stop sleeping next to your phone

This week, I actually started doing what everyone tells you: I put my phone in another room when I go to bed, hoping to cut down on the time I spend scrolling right before bed and immediately after waking up. I grudgingly admit that it really helps. I am also reluctant to admit that I have not been able to do it every night, but now I see a light and would like to make it the rule, not the exception, in my daily life.

Invest in better quality bedding

I bought a duvet cover for my blanket. This means it is now a duvet, so basically I got the duvet for free.

Give in to the hype and start watching Queer Eye

Now that Westworld is ready, I had to pick another show to watch from time to time. While Chef’s Table still sits at the top of my must-complete list, I decided to check out the latest Queer Eye installment and I think I’ll enjoy it for a while. Episode one, season one, so charming, inspirational and positive – and I can’t wait to see what else the five have in store.

Try a story when you get the chance

I’m in Aspen, Colorado now and I read local history as usual when I travel somewhere I’ve never been. Well, there is a very old hotel here called Hotel Jerome. Adjacent to the hotel is the J-Bar serving an interesting cocktail called Aspen Crude. Basically, it’s an ice cream milkshake with a few servings of bourbon. Sounds strange, but it’s good! It turns out the J-Bar turned into an ice cream parlor during Prohibition, but local silver miners still wanted to find a way to get booze – and Aspen Crud was born. What was once a secret Wild West menu item is now history and you can drink it yourself.
