How to Use YouTube’s Picture-in-Picture Feature on Android

YouTube just made picture-in-picture feature free for all users using devices running Android Oreo or later. Previously, this feature was only available to YouTube Premium customers.

To use it, you just need to have the latest version of YouTube installed on your device.

When you watch a video, press the Home button on your device and this will turn the YouTube video into a small window on your screen rather than close the app. That’s all.

It’s certainly not the most awesome feature, but it’s a good one. There is something pretty foolproof about keeping watching cute cat videos while checking your email.

Unfortunately, picture-in-picture does not work for music videos. If you try to use picture-in-picture with a music video, the app will simply close when you press the Home button. YouTube still retains the ability to listen to music with the screen off as a YouTube Premium feature, as well as a number of other features such as ad-free browsing and offline playback.
