Narcan Is Now Available Over the Counter in 46 States

Walgreens announced this week that it is now dispensing naloxone, a drug that can stop opioid overdose, without a prescription in 46 states . (If you have a prescription, you can buy it in any state.) CVS offers it over the counter in 43 states .

But in which states? CVS has a list : you still need a recipe in Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Wyoming. All their stores store it or can order it the next business day, the spokesperson said.

A Walgreens spokesman said their stores require a prescription under the laws of the states of Delaware, Hawaii and Wyoming; they have no stores in North Dakota.

Narcan, a popular brand name, is expensive. GoodRx lists a price with a coupon at around $ 135 per pack . The product is a nasal spray and comes in packs of two applicators. If the first dose does not return the overdose person, the second should be given.

Naloxone – whether in the narcan form or in the cheaper but less convenient syringe form – is a medication you can carry with you in case you think you might need to use it. Now it is even easier to do this.
