The Difference Between a Button Down Shirt and a Button Down Shirt
You may not be aware there is a difference between a button-up and a button-down shirt, and while this is largely semantic, this video describes both types well, so you know what you are looking for the next time you go shopping.
What you call these button-down shirts has nothing to do with whether you start buttoning the shirt at the top or bottom, it all depends on whether they have buttons on the collar. If you can button the collar flap over the shirt itself, then you have a button. Otherwise, you have buttons that don’t have buttons on the collar.
Likewise, a button-down shirt can also be called a button-down shirt, but not all buttoned-up buttons can be buttoned up. The video explains, but if you ever see both names and wonder what the difference is, now you know.
