Show Your Child’s Drawings on the Wall Without Attention

Soon after we moved into our home a few years ago, my son went to kindergarten. Suddenly, several times a week, he brought home giant finger drawings, holiday scenes and figurines.

It was all so cute, but there were so many drawings that my refrigerator could bend under their weight. In addition, there were certain things that I really liked and that I wanted to showcase for more than a week or two before they were replaced by the latest masterpiece. But I’m also not one of those who like to hang children’s drawings in the living room.

Once, when I was going downstairs to wash my unfinished (and somewhat dull) basement, it occurred to me: the wall in this staircase is huge. And boring. And not in the main living quarters. I could turn this into an art wall.

This idea can work in any normally overlooked, unadorned space in your home, such as a messy room, laundry room, or walk-in closet. You could fantasize and frame the painting with cheap picture frames, but I chose the quick and dirty tape method.

Obviously, not everything can be displayed. The wall is large, but not endless. Works of art that we love, but we know not necessarily “forever”, still remain in the refrigerator. But every now and then, when my son brings home something particularly sentimental or that he has been working on for weeks, I announce that it is happening on The Art Wall and his eyes light up.

If you’re short on room to work, or a kid who wants EVERYTHING to display forever, try implementing a replacement policy. When the wall is full, if they want to hang something new, they have to select the old piece and remove it to make space.
