“Unclack” for Mac Mutes Your Microphone While You Type

Have you ever been in a meeting where you are taking notes, reviewing information, or just sneaking around with your colleagues? If so, you might want to hide the constant clicking of your keyboard. If you can’t mute these calls, try Unclack , a free Mac app that mutes typing sounds.

The app is deceptively simple and gets the job done quite effectively. The moment you start typing, the microphone will turn off, and as soon as you finish, it will turn you on. This is really handy for long online meetings where constantly having the sound on or off is annoying.

Once Unclack is installed, you will see it in your Mac’s menu bar. Click the application icon and select “Set up keyboard access “. A pop-up window will open where you can click on the keyboard permissions button. You’ll be taken to your Mac’s accessibility settings page. You’ll have to manually add Unclack here by clicking the + button and selecting the app from the Applications folder in the Finder. Once this is done, Unclack will ask you to exit and reopen the app, and you’re good to go.

When Unclack is running, you’ll see a red dot on the menu bar icon as you type. This means your microphone is muted. You can go to the app settings to customize the app a bit. Unclack has a variable mute volume setting that allows you to set your preferred microphone volume while typing. This will help if you don’t want to mute the sound completely, but simply turn down the microphone volume while you type. It also allows you to adjust the microphone volume when you’re not typing, which is good for people who prefer not to be too loud during online meetings.

By customizing the app to your liking, you can safely type as much as you want during calls. If you want to talk while typing, click the Unclack menu bar icon and select Pause Unclack . This will pause the app for a while and allow you to type and talk at the same time. Be sure to turn it back on to have the app mute the sound when you type.

Unclack works with all video conferencing apps, so your colleagues won’t notice you’re muted. The app will mute your Mac’s microphone at the system level, and it won’t affect the microphone indicator in any video conferencing app you use. You can unmute Zoom so that when Unclack is running, your colleagues won’t hear you typing or see that your microphone is muted.
