Don’t Use These Recalled Heating Pads, FDA Says

Heating pads can provide comfort when you’re sick, ill, or just downright cold. But for those who own one of the half million heating pads recalled for safety reasons, they could have the opposite effect. Here’s what you need to know about a mass recall, including what to do if you’ve purchased one of the defective products.

Why are heating pads being recalled?

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration , Whele LLC, distributor of Mighty Bliss electric heating pads, announced a voluntary recall of three of its models on October 24 following numerous consumer reports of product-induced injury. A total of 544,212 heating pads are being recalled.

Between July 2021 and September 2022, the company received 286 complaints related to overheating, sparking, fire, or other electrical problems, according to the FDA . Of these, 31 complaints reported injuries resulting from the use of heating pads, including electric shock, burns, rashes and other skin irritations.

Which heating pads respond?

According to the FDA , all products included in the recall are Mighty Bliss electric heating pads that were distributed between July 2021 and July 2022 and sold online through Amazon.com and Walmart.com.

To find out if you belong to one of the three recalled models, look for the product model and lot numbers printed directly on the heating pad in black text below the product instructions and check if they are listed here :

What to do if you bought a recalled heating pad

If you have checked the label on a heating pad and determined that it is subject to recall, the FDA directs consumers to stop using it immediately. But, if you’re looking for a refund, don’t throw it away.

To receive compensation for a recalled product, Whele LLC requires consumers to take the following steps :

  1. Make sure the heating pad is unplugged. (Even if you know it is, double check to be on the safe side.)
  2. Safely cut the cord from the device.
  3. Take a picture of the heating pad, which shows that the cord has been cut and the device can no longer be used.
  4. Starting October 31st, visit the recall website and upload a photo of a heating pad with cut cord. Further instructions should then also be available.

If you bought a heating pad but have already disposed of it (perhaps because it shocked you), the recall website will also have instructions on how to get a refund, as well as other refund information. For now, the site has only posted the main recall notice and states that the refund information will arrive “during the week of October 31st”.
