Stop Using These Recalled Unilever Dry Shampoo Brands, FDA Says

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that shampoo maker Unilever has voluntarily recalled a number of its dry shampoos due to potentially elevated levels of benzene, a chemical known to cause cancer.

Benzene is a carcinogen, and exposure to this chemical, when inhaled, ingested, or through the skin, can cause cancers such as leukemia and blood cancer in the bone marrow, as well as other dangerous blood diseases.

The recall was made out of precaution, Unilever said. “Based on an independent health hazard assessment, daily exposure to benzene in recalled products at levels found in testing will not cause adverse health effects,” the statement said. The company says it has not received reports of “adverse events” from anyone related to the recall.

An investigation determined that the propellant in the products is the source of the chemical’s spread, and Unilever is looking into the matter.
