Fastest Ways to Convert Those Annoying WebP Images

WebP is Google’s version of the modern Universal Image Format designed to replace formats such as PNG and JPEG. However, all he managed to do over the past few years was to be slightly annoying. It’s great when websites use it to display images – the format handles compression well – but it’s a problem for people who want to download and use an image. If you’ve ever uploaded an image only to scratch your head over the .webp extension at the end, you know how painful that is. However, there is an answer and, oddly enough, the best way is to use a Chrome extension.

Download WebP PNG images

It’s best to address the problem at the source, and the ” Save Image as PNG ” Chrome extension does just that. Once installed, right-click on any WebP image in Chrome or Chromium browsers and select the ” Save Image as PNG ” option. The extension converts and saves the image in PNG format. This will result in a significantly larger image file size, but it’s probably worth it for a file format you can use everywhere.

Converting WebP Images on Windows

If you’re using a Windows PC, you don’t need to download a third-party WebP image conversion app. The old trusty Paint app will do the trick. Open the WebP file in the Paint app, then choose File > Save As . Here you can choose either ” PNG Image ” or ” JPEG Image ” depending on your needs. Then choose a destination folder and you’re done.

Converting WebP Images on Mac

Similarly, the built-in Preview app will help you open and convert WebP images. Open the image in Preview and choose File > Export . From the Export menu, click the drop-down list next to the Format option and select either JPEG or PNG . Select a destination folder and click ” Save ” to convert the image.

If you’re on the latest version of macOS, you can use Finder’s Quick Actions feature to quickly convert one or more WebP images. Go to Finder and select images, right click them and choose Quick Actions > Convert Image . Choose a format and size, and then click ” Convert to JPEG “. The new file will be saved in the same directory.

Convert WebP images online

If you want to convert WebP files within the browser itself, you have a variety of options. You can use a website like Cloud Convert which will let you convert five WebP images to JPEG at the same time.
