The Meaning and Etymology of the Word “this Guy Is Fucking”

The headline you see above sparked minor controversy in the Lifehacker comments section last week, with several readers wondering if there was a bug. Of course we wanted to write “sucks”, right? No. The title is as intended. This is a game of the popular expression “this guy is fucking” on the Internet, which at least some of our employees were familiar with. But the confusion made us wonder about the origin of this phrase, so I figured I needed to clarify a little.

The definition of “this guy is fucking”

According to the most popular definition from urban dictionary.com , “this guy is fucking” means “this guy / girl is doing it.” They know their shit and they are the boss. ” So, “this guy is fucking” usually means “this person is so helpful that other people will sleep with him.”

You often see this in comment sections in response to a particularly insightful post from someone with knowledge of the issue under discussion. It can also be applied to inanimate objects – music, video games, Popeye’s pre-cooked Cajun turkey, and more – for a comedic effect. Less common: Some online opponents ironically use the word to mean “this guy doesn’t fuck.”

The vulgarity underlying the idiom means that it is probably used more frequently on the Internet than in the IRL.

The origin of the word “this guy is fucking”

There is a definite point of origin for the widespread use of the phrase “this guy is fucking”: HBO’s Silicon Valley Season 3, Episode 2.

In the episode “Bad Money,” which first aired on April 26, 2015, Cuban-style venture capitalist Russ Hanneman looks at the weak nerds that make up the cast of Silicon Valley. CEO Jared Dunn states, “This guy is fucking. I’m right? Because I look at the rest of you guys, and this is the guy in the house who does the damn thing. I’m right? You know that I am right. This guy is fucking. “

Here’s a clip:

It’s a simple scene when you first view it, but there is actually a lot going on. Jared seems like the opposite of whoever has sex – Guilfoyle, with his LaVey Satanic lifestyle and polyamorous girlfriend, is an obvious choice for the real “sex-minded” crew members, as is the smarmy PR man Erlich Bachmann. Hanneman seems to mess with Dunn (who is replete with psychological issues and lives in a garage) to make him feel uncomfortable with his lack of social value. But Hanneman is actually right: Jared does the fuck. Although he voluntarily gave up his social life to concentrate on work, Jared had no problem making dates (and sleeping with them) in his converted garage bedroom.

That line was spread further by sardonic presenter John Oliver on HBO’s Last Week Tonight , and from there to the rest of the world, including our discussion of the $ 50 Popeye Cajun turkey that, against all odds, actually fucks.
