How to Make a Simple Syrup in Less Than a Minute

Simple syrup is great to have on hand when you want to make a cocktail at home, but buying it in the store seems wasteful if it’s nothing more than sugar and water. However, making your own syrup on the stove has its drawbacks (namely that you have to wait for it to heat up and cool down again, which further delays the shake-making process). Luckily, I found a better and faster way to make my own syrup at home.

How to make a simple syrup in less than a minute

To make a serving of simple syrup in less than a minute , all you have to do is:

  1. Place a 1: 1 mixture of sugar and water in a glass jar and close the lid.
  2. Shake the mixture vigorously for about 20-30 seconds.

Once you shake the mixture until the sugar dissolves, let the mixture sit for a few minutes to calm down. If there are a few nasty granules left, you can always put them in the microwave for a few seconds to dissolve the remaining sugar.

That’s all you have to do. Just stir, shake, and then, after a few minutes, add it to whatever drink you mix. If you want a cool option with a light flavor, you can also make this ginger syrup , which combines fresh ginger juice and super-fine sugar for a bright, spicy flavor that’s the best you can get in the store.

For other cocktail syrups, use the microwave.

While this no-heat method is not entirely suitable for making Demerara syrup, you can easily prepare a batch using the microwave , which requires less heat and reduces overall cleaning. The microwave method also works with other cocktail syrups you might want to make, such as honey syrup.

The advantage of these methods is that not only are they quick and easy, but they also make exactly the amount you need, so you won’t be burdened with leftover syrup that ends up being shoved into the back of the refrigerator.
