Your Peleton Pedals May Have Been Recalled
If you’ve spent the past few months cruising around the pandemic on a Peloton bike, it might be a good idea to take a closer look at your pedals today, as the fitness company has recalled about 27,000 clips from their bikes. Plus, it turns out that you have to change the pedals on an exercise bike regularly, so you should be aware of this regardless of whether the recall affects your particular bike. Here’s what you need to know.
What is remembered?
Yesterday , the Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a voluntary recall warning for some 54,000 Peloton PR70P snap-action pedals, affecting approximately 27,000 bicycles. These are the first generation pedals found on Peloton bikes sold between July 2013 and May 2016, models that sold for about $ 2,000 (for the entire bike, not just the pedals). The bicycles were sold through the Peloton website , by phone, and at their showrooms across the country.
Why are pedals responding?
It turns out Peloton received 120 consumer reports of pedal breakdowns , including 16 reports of foot injuries. Of the 16 leg injuries, five required medical attention, including stitching a leg wound.
How to determine if your pedals are included in the recall
According to a post on the Peloton website, here’s what to look for to determine if your pedals are affected:
- The Peloton logo and the word “PELOTON” are embedded in the pedal body.
- Orange Peloton symbol and white PELOTON lettering are printed on the top of the cleat mount.
If your bike has pedals with white “PELOTON” letters and no orange Peloton logo, they will not be recalled.
If you find that your bike does have recalled pedals with a PR70P clip, the company advises customers to stop using their bikes immediately until they receive new pedals.
What to do if your pedals have been revoked
If you purchased your bike directly from Peloton (and not at the trendiest sale in the yard), you should expect a response from the company. They notify all affected consumers directly with information on how to obtain free replacement pedals, as well as self-installation instructions .
Otherwise, you can order a new pedal kit by submitting a new pedal order form , or call Peloton (at 844-410-0141) and someone will walk you through the process over the phone.
How often should you change the pedals anyway?
Recall or not, Peloton says their pedals should be replaced after a year (warranty period). Therefore, if you purchased your bike between 2013 and 2016 and are still using the original pedals, it is recommended that you buy new ones anyway. The company recommends that owners of any stationary bike have their pedals replaced annually, so even if you don’t have a Peloton, consider replacing yours with a new pair if you’ve been cycling for over a year.
