Share Your Desktop With up to 10 People With This Free App

Working from home requires reliable communications, and while many of us are likely participating in more Zoom calls lately, paying for a premium or enterprise-grade video conferencing app can be difficult for small businesses or freelancers. There are several decent video chat apps available, but many lack important video conferencing features like screen sharing.

Fortunately, there is a free open source program that can help.

Using the WebRTC platform, the WebRTC Screen Sharing web application allows you to remotely share your desktop with up to 10 other users for free. The utility runs entirely in your browser – you don’t need to download any .ZIP folders or suspicious .exe files, or install an app or browser plug-in to use it. You don’t even need to register an account. It only works in the desktop browser, but supports Chrome, Firefox and Edge (with Safari support).

How to create a private screen sharing room

  1. Open a screen sharing page without WebRTC plugins in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox.
  2. Click Show Your Screen. Your browser will ask you for permission and let you choose which parts of the screen to stream. You can select Full Screen, Application Window, or Browser Tab. (They may differ slightly depending on which browser you are using.)
  3. Now click on “Copy and Paste This Private Room Link to copy the link and send it to your group. A maximum of ten people can be added to a room.
  4. You can also add #private-room or ?private=room to the end of your room’s url and press Enter to make it private (you will need to re-share the private link if you do).
  5. That’s all! Your desktop live stream will now be streamed through your browser’s video player while you stay in the room. To stop sharing, just close the link.

The WebRTC landing page also includes additional troubleshooting tips and links to the WebRTC GitHub page , a list of recent updates, and a link to a bug report form if you need more help or want to report a problem.
