What Is Life Like for a Child With ADHD

Children with ADHD can appear scattered, indecisive, impulsive, and undisciplined. But in reality, they perceive and process the world around us in a different way. Gaining some insight into their perspective – and realizing that it’s not just a matter of sitting still and focusing – can go a long way in increasing our empathy.

That’s where this beautiful Swedish video, titled Falling Letters , by Eric Rosenlund, comes in. It is only four minutes long and has no dialogue, but if you are anything like me, you will cry to the end.

Author Rachel Garlinghouse writes for Scary Mommy that as a parent of a child with ADHD, this video made her realize that she was more focused on how disappointing it was to raise her son, rather than what ADHD was like for him. And what does it help us to see the beauty that they see:

What I desperately want is for others to see all the amazing qualities my child with ADHD possesses, including friendliness, courtesy, creativity, and intelligence. And these “bad” qualities? While some might think my child is distracted, I would clap back that children with ADHD are spotters. While other children may run past the flower, my child, like the one shown in the video, took the time to study it, pluck it and use it to create something intricate and beautiful.

Even if you don’t have a child with ADHD, it’s helpful to watch this video and share it with your kids. Because chances are that you know and love someone with ADHD, and that can help you better understand what their typical day is like.
