What You Need to Know the First Time on Hot Yoga

Maybe you need something to keep warm now when the air is cold. You may have heard that hot yoga is relaxing. Or maybe you want to try something challenging, but easier in a way: your muscles are more flexible when they are warm. Welcome to hot yoga.

If you haven’t heard of hot yoga, you might think I am making this up. I promise not. This is a yoga class taught in a studio that heats up to – in the case of Bikram , the original hot yoga – 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

You may have done yoga before, but if hot yoga is new to you, the usual advice for beginners still applies: tell the instructor that you are a beginner, don’t be afraid to ask questions before class, and feel free to change. moves if you really need a break.

Here are some of the things I learned the first time:

  • People wear bikinis . You can wear whatever you want, but it gets very hot in this room. Some people in my class wore leggings and some wore shirts, but no one wore both. I would say the average outfit was a pair of shorts and a sports bra.
  • Same posture every time . Bikram Yoga uses a very specific sequence of postures in a 90 minute session. (However, this does not apply to all types of hot yoga.) After you finish a few sessions, it will become much easier for you to follow them.
  • You will sweat like never before . You will need a large towel to place on top of the rug or it will turn into a slip. Plan to shower afterward, which may be due to an uncomfortable shared shower.

Now it’s time to share your thoughts on hot yoga with us. If you are a devotee, what do you think is the most important thing for a newbie to know? And if you’re thinking about giving it a try, what questions do you have?
