How to Enable YouTube Secret Dark Mode in Chrome

If you are using Google Chrome 57 or higher, it turns out there is a hidden dark mode. Reddit user _paul- found a menu that can be turned on by quickly navigating to the console menu.

The dark color is, as you would expect, dark, with a black background and white text. Here’s how to enable it:

  1. Go to YouTube .
  2. Open the developer menu by pressing Ctrl + Shift + I on Windows (Option + Command + I on Mac).
  3. Click Console.
  4. Paste this line of text: document.cookie=”VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE=fPQ4jCL6EiE” then hit Enter (note: so far document.cookie=”VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE=fPQ4jCL6EiE” into Reddit and paste the code from there as we are having some technical difficulties).
  5. Close the developer window and refresh the page.
  6. If you’re signed in to your YouTube account, click the YouTube profile icon. Then tap Dark Mode. If you’re not signed in, click the three-dot icon that appears, then select Dark Mode.

That’s it, the experimental dark mode is now available to you. Commenters suggest it works in other browsers as well. Firefox requires you to delete old cookies first, and it should work in Edge out of the box. However, I couldn’t load it in Safari.
