These DIY Compound Containers Keep Snacks Organized and Easy to Reach

Snacks are the key to survival on a long trip. Whether you’re traveling or on an airplane, this container tower keeps your snacks together and is easy to take with you. Here’s what you need to make your own in less than ten minutes.

You will need three or four containers of the same size, a 4mm nylon cord (the same length as your stacked containers plus another six inches), two plastic straws, and a carabiner clip. The clip should be large enough to fit around anything you want to attach snacks to, such as a bag loop or car seat headrest.

Remove the container lids and mark the center of each lid and the bottom of each container, trying your best to line them up. Drill a hole in each mark using a slightly wide nylon cord. Cut the straws into pieces the same length as the inside of the container (top to bottom). Tie a strong knot at the end of the cord, pull one container over it, then a piece of straw and a lid. Repeat until all containers are on the cord. Leave two inches of excess cord at the top of the tower and tie a loop at the end of the cord. Slip the carabiner through the loop and your tower is ready to be filled with snacks.

Sure, you could just toss a couple of containers in your bag, but this tower holds your lids and containers together. It is also not waterproof, but it travels well, especially in a bag or in a car. You can also use this tower structure for any small items that need to be kept separate but used together as a simple repair kit.
