Now You Can Treat Alexa Like a Computer, Because Star Trek Is Real Life.

The future you have been waiting for has arrived. Amazon has added a new accepted word to activate your personal voice assistant: Computer. I don’t need to explain how cool this is to the Star Trek nerds.

For all other “Computer” – is a trigger word that Star Trek used to communicate with different systems with voice control, since the original series in 1966 . You can now use the same word to activate Alexa with Amazon Echo . To change the wake word, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Alexa app on your phone.
  2. Pull down the left navigation bar and click on Settings.
  3. Tap the device you want to change.
  4. Scroll down and tap Wake Word.
  5. Tap the drop-down list and select Computer from the list.
  6. Tap Save.

After that, your echo will respond to the word “Computer” instead of “Alex”. Of course, don’t be surprised if you accidentally activate Alexa more often with this setting. While Echo tries to ignore cases where it seems like you are using the wake-up word in a sentence rather than as a command, this is not ideal. The ideal wake-up word is one that you won’t say often unless you’re talking directly to your voice assistant, and the word “computer” isn’t quite the right word for this count. It’s really cool though.
