Use a Soda Can As an Impromptu Line Tensioner

Whether you are setting up a tent, tarp, or even a hammock, you often need a tensioner to keep the lines tight. If you are stranded, you can make a simple one from a soda pill.

In this video, Grant Thompson shares clever advice for replacing a lost or broken tensioner while on a hike. First, remove the tab from the soda or beer can. The key is to twist the tab and insert it into the mouth of the can so that it stays intact. Then pull the line through the part of the tongue that turned when it was attached to the can. Once you have some line, tie it to another loop of the loop. Now you can hook the loop to be pinned or nailed in and tighten.
