Four Things to Remember About the Interviewer the Next Time You Interview

The interview should be a two-way street, a conversation between you and a potential employer to make sure you fit together. It also means that there are some things you should keep in mind about your interviewers when you step into them that usually go unnoticed. Here are a few of them.

Glassdoor explains that some of them can calm your mind and slightly ease the tension that comes with job interviews, but it can also help you get past the Q&A style of most job interviews and help you understand where your interviewers are coming from. :

  • They want you to be comfortable . It happens in different ways, but most of the time they want you to relax so they can really feel real and their skills. They don’t want to make you artificially nervous.
  • They want you to be impressed . Interviewers usually don’t invite people unless they really think they are suitable, so they want you to be impressed with the work they offer, their offices, team, etc. They want you to want the job, and they understand that it is they who have to sell it to you.
  • Most are not trying to deceive you . Trick questions aren’t uncommon, but they’re even rarer now than ever. Questions are not “gimmicks” these days, they are just curves designed to help them see how you figure out a complex, non-obvious problem.
  • They probably crunch too . Maybe they’re trying to fill a position that urgently needs to be filled, or putting together a team that is overwhelmed and overwhelmed. Maybe they’re just all busy and interview time is the time when they can work. In any case, it is not just that you feel disadvantaged, and you are not necessarily at a disadvantage. You need a job as much as they need someone to do it, so keep that in mind. This levels the playing field.

The second and last one is very important to remember from my experience, and it helps a lot if you keep them in mind during the interview. It helps to show your own confidence and not just feel like you are entering the lion’s den.
