You Don’t Always Need to Be Aware of Everything

According to local news reports, a local resident stopped checking Twitter for a few minutes yesterday and died immediately because he was not in the know. But that did not happen. It never happens. So don’t worry like that.

Personal finance site The Escape Artist brings up the compelling thought that sometimes it’s best not to be up to date. Not just in the spirit of “damn it, kids and mobile phones.” Rather, staying on top of everything means you will face new challenges. The more TV shows you have to watch, the more they take up your free time. The more you stay up to date with the latest news about the new smartphone, the more you will feel the need to replace your current one. For your own well-being, it may sometimes be best to simply ignore the fact that there is new information:

If you want to get rich by improving your mental health, I suggest you stop watching TV news, ads, and infomercials. How can you cope if you don’t know what some politician said? Or what’s hot in Milan this spring? Or who won the X Factor? Or what’s the last igadget. Hint: Probably not bad. If something really interesting happens, someone will let you know by word of mouth. And, unless you’re a diplomat, general, or world leader, you probably don’t need to watch depressing footage of natural disasters, terrorism, or foreign wars.

The problem with staying on top of everything is that it never ends. You are a mortal man with a limited number of hours in a day, and the world is doing more than you can keep up with. Every time you decide to read a story or take the time to learn about a major event, that time is taken away from other tasks. It’s great if you pay attention to what interests you, but if you only do it because you feel abandoned otherwise, you might be better off skipping that train.
