Make a jury stick by wrapping a rubber band around a chopstick or skewer and submerging it in the liquid when you first start shrinking. Roll the gum over the stick until it touches the surface of the liquid – this is your starting point. As the liquid decreases, insert this stick into the liquid from time to time and use it to determine how much the liquid has decreased.

This method is best for when you need to reduce the amount of fluid. For a smaller amount, you can simply tilt the pan to visually tell how much water you have prepared.
