Step Away From Your Perfectionism by Practicing Imperfection

Perfectionism can kill your productivity and add unnecessary stress to your life. By deliberately making small deeds imperfect, you can gradually grow and feel more comfortable when big deeds are imperfect.

Breaking free from the captivity of perfectionism is difficult. Most of the time, in order to do something difficult, you need to practice. So why not practice making something imperfect? Martin M. Anthony, professor of psychology and co-author of When Perfect Is Not Good enough , suggests that you can overcome your perfectionism by practicing imperfect behavior:

Just as if someone is afraid of a dog, we approach the dogs until they are no longer afraid. We encourage people to expose themselves to this imperfection so that they are more comfortable with it – test these beliefs, do small experiments to find out if this belief is really true; Is it really as important as it seems, is it really perfect, for example, the cake I baked for my child’s birthday?

Sometimes fighting perfectionism is just a matter of moving on to the next case, but other times it takes practice. Try doing something imperfect once a day. Make a small typo in your email or text, fold your clothes the wrong way, or run a minute less than usual during your workout. Relax and remember that practice is imperfect.
