Think of Your Budget As a Training Wheel, Not Absolute Rules

Many of us strive to save money, or at least be more mindful when we spend it. Budgets are a great tool for managing spending, but if they’re too tight, you won’t follow through. Try to think of them as training wheels and you are more likely to stay on track.

The Simple Dollar explains why the budget should not be viewed as a lifetime burden:

Budgets are a tool to help you transform your usual behavior into a set of more financially responsible behaviors, no more, no less. A budget is successful when it becomes so transparent that it is no longer needed, like a six-year-old girl who starts flying her bike when both training wheels are off the ground.

Whatever tools you choose to start budgeting, don’t get discouraged from the outset. Budgeting works at any income level, even if you’re broke .
