How to Get Free HIV Prevention Medicines

Medications called PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, can reduce your risk of getting HIV by 97%. They are recommended for anyone at high risk of contracting the virus, including people with an HIV-positive partner. These drugs can be expensive without insurance, but today the government announced a program to give them free to people without insurance.

To be eligible, you need to get a negative HIV test and prove that you do not have coverage for your prescription drugs. (If you have insurance, the insurance must cover the full costs .) In addition, you must get a prescription for the drug (Truvad or Descovy) from a doctor or clinic.

To register or to find out if you are eligible, go to GetYourPrEP.com . The program covers the cost of drugs, but does not cover the cost of visiting an office or laboratory. So if cost is an issue, ask your clinic if they offer HIV testing at a low cost or on a sliding scale and if they write prescriptions.
