How to Find Free Movies and TV Shows on Plex

Today Plex launched a new free ad-supported streaming service for movies and TV shows, and here’s the best part: there is no way to not watch ads. Even if you’re a subscriber to Plex Pass , Plex ‘s premium offering, you’ll still see ads when you watch anything on its streaming service. Are these minor annoyances worth it? Absolutely.

The first is the Plex scope. The free Plex app works on almost any device you can use it. I am running this app on my smart TV, PlayStation 4, iPad and old NAS. I have yet to come across something that Plex cannot run other than obvious devices like the smart display, which doesn’t support third-party apps at all. This way, you can access the Plex streaming service from almost anywhere, using just about anything.

And then there is the content. As Plex points out on its website , it uses films and TV shows from studios such as Legendary, Lionsgate, Warner Bros. and MGM, just to name a few . What does this mean in practice? Well, you get mostly Category B movies, but there are a number of rough diamonds, so Plex’s offering is worth checking out. My favorite:

All in all, how good is the Plex lineup like what you find on, say, Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Video ? Not even close. But that’s what you get for a low price for free – a ton of movies that are perfect for your next bad movie night, but there aren’t many movies you’ll want to add to your next date (unless Steven Seagal really starts).

If you need to add a little variety to your lineup, there are tons of other services you can use to stream movies for free, usually with ads. I’m a Tubi fan (for Kill Bill and Hell’s Kitchen ); Hoopla (for everything your library offers); IMDb TV (for Gravity and Whiplash ); Popcornflix (for Silence and The Dictator ); and Sony Crackle (for Sony stuff like Die Hard or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon ). Look closely enough and you can find a pretty decent selection of free content.
