What to Do If Your Child Hates Crust

My son, like many children, had an ongoing relationship of love and hate for the crust of bread. However, more attention has been paid to hatred, especially recently. When he was little I avoided them completely by making his sandwiches on ” thin sandwiches “. But it only worked if I could find a variety that had no visible grains or seeds, which were also offensive.

Then, in honor of his love for dinosaurs – and because I was tired of picking oats from bread – I switched to this dinosaur sandwich cutting machine . It was great and he liked it, but it really is a one-size-fits-all solution, even though not all bread is produced in the same size. It was a little too big for most regular loaves of bread, so I often either left a little crust or I stood at the counter trying to stretch each piece of bread just a little to fit outside the cutter.

Finally, when my son reached the age at which he could reasonably be better, I explained that I was not officially in the business of collecting seeds and crushing the crusts. If he wanted a sandwich, it had to be square with a crust all around the edges, which, as I explained, was actually just bread that gets a little darker as it bakes. He got over it and ate a lot of sandwiches and I need to stop thinking about the crust.

That is about a month ago when I stumbled upon a bread massacre taking place all over my kitchen table. “It’s okay,” he said. “You don’t need to cut them. I’ll just rip them off. ” Suddenly, literally after several years of eating the crusts, he decided they were gone.

I tried to ignore it, but it was really wasteful. He shot huge pieces of bread, meat and cheese, along with the crust; but when I said that I had no business to cut the crusts, I meant it. And even if I relented and cut them for him at home from time to time, I knew that this destruction almost certainly occurs in the school cafeteria every day when half of his sandwich ends up in the trash.

A few weeks after this bullshit, my husband texted me with the idea, “You know, if he’s going to be a birdie about the crusts, can we make him sandwiches on hamburger buns?”

At first, I resisted this idea (IT’S JUST A CREST), but I realized that there really is no reason why a sandwich should be made on sliced bread. My child may not like crust, but he does like a good hamburger roll. But in fact, and who is not? They are soft, easy to handle, and are uniform in texture and color. The hamburger bun is the perfect bread and makes delicious sandwiches for kids and adults alike.

That day I went out, bought a pack of Martin’s “sandwich rolls (!!)” and casually asked my son, “Do you want me to make your sandwich on a hamburger bun?”

And he, I am not exaggerating, sighed with happiness.
