This Soirizo Frito Pie Will Delight the Whole Team
As a general rule, I am not a fan of meat substitutes that try too hard to imitate the “real”. Vegetables are not meat and never will be, and that’s okay. Having said that, I would like to immediately contradict myself by singing the supreme technology of artificial meat production: soirizo in a plastic tube. Other standouts in this category – Smoked False Duck , Tofu in all its many forms, and Morningstar Veggie Sausage Patties – may be delicious on their own, but you’ll never mistake them for animal products. Soirizo, however, is in a special league. To the extent that you can ever pass off vegan meat as animal meat, a heavily garlic, neon orange soybean paste does the job perfectly.
All of this makes soirizo the perfect base for a bite to eat at a party, no matter who comes in and what they like. Vegans and vegetarians alike already know what the deal is, but this time it’s no exaggeration to say that meat eaters probably don’t even know they’re not eating pork. (However, people with soy allergies should definitely avoid, so keep that in mind.) If you’re throwing a Super Bowl party this weekend and need to please your guests with various dietary restrictions, I don’t think you can beat Soiriso Frito Pie. …
Somewhere between chili and hot cheese sauce – but much easier to serve than either of them – Frito Pie is essentially the perfect snack for a big rowdy crowd. To prepare it, you basically need to dump different cans and bags into a multicooker or multicooker and ignore it for several hours. Plus, instead of separate bowls or a common saucepan, Frito is served straight from the Fritos package – completely self-contained.
If your bag seems a little nasty to you, you are not alone. The departed legend and icon Anthony Bourdain, when he was served a frito pie in New Mexico, summed up the experience with amazing accuracy: “ It feels like you are keeping warm shit in your bag. “
I can’t argue with Tony’s assessment, but the pros of the bag far outweigh the cons. Handing out what is essentially a dip with its own chip in separate manual parcels means no one needs to try and unsuccessfully pour the perfect amount of dip onto a fragile paper plate. It also discourages double dipping and dipping – there is pork in each group; it’s a fact – it eliminates spills that inevitably occur somewhere along the path from chip to plate to mouth. The most important thing, and I can’t stress it enough, is the Frito pie bangs. Claiming that a cheesy, spicy ball poured over deboned corn nuts is not entirely innovative, but sometimes the whole exceeds the sum of its parts. Add pickled jalapenos, sour cream and maybe some chopped onions for the perfect party snack. As written, this is clearly not a vegan product, but soirizo and original Fritos. For a completely animal-free version, you ditch the dairy and double up on Ro-Tel and beans. Serve sour cream and cheese, vegan or regular, to those who want it.
To make a bubbly cauldron of this spicy, deliciously cheese ball, you’ll need: • 2 tablespoons of neutral butter • 1 12-ounce pack of soiriso removed from its plastic tube • 1 10-ounce can diced tomatoes and green chili peppers, such as Ro-Tel or more • 1 15-ounce can of beans, any grade, no liquid • 1 12-ounce can of condensed milk • 4 ounces of cream cheese • 1 pound of grated cheese in bags, any kind • Hot sauce of your choice, to taste • Salt and MSG, to taste. If using the Instant Pot, heat the oil on the More fry setting; If using a multicooker, heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium to high heat. Add soiriso and brown well, stirring occasionally to keep from burning. Add condensed milk and cream cheese. When the cream cheese is completely melted, gradually add the grated cheese in bags. Finally, pour in Ro Tel and beans and bring to a boil. Season to taste with hot sauce, salt and / or MSG.
Adjust the Instant Pot for Slow Cooking “Less” and set the cooking time as long as you want the sauce to stay warm. (For a regular multicooker, transfer the contents of the pot to the multicooker insert and set the heat to low.) Stir occasionally, but it should stay warm without breaking for a good six to eight hours. …
Before your guests arrive, have a buffet table with delicious toppings next to the Instant Pot or multicooker. Here are what I used: • Snack-sized bags of Fritos or other corn chips • Sour cream • More cheese • Chopped red onions • Pickled jalapenos • Chopped cilantro • Spoons, obviously if all you could find would be a multipack, with Doritos, for example, don’t worry – I’ve researched both Cool Ranch and Nacho Cheese Doritos pie for you and found them both extremely enjoyable. I know this is shocking.
