Turn on Android 10 Dark Mode in Selected Apps With DarQ
Android 10’s system-level dark theme is pretty good, but a third-party DarQ app can unlock hidden settings that make it even better. DarQ allows you to force applications to use dark mode if they don’t have it, and you can use DarQ to tell which applications receive it, set dark mode timers, and more. Google stores the app in the Play Store as it plays with portions of Android software that are generally prohibited, so you will need to install it from XDA Labs’ third-party app store .
You will also need a rooted phone or will want to install additional software to use DarQ’s features. If you have a rooted phone, simply install DarQ from XDA Labs and skip to the Using DarQ section below to start using it.
Using DarQ without root
Those who do not have root access to their phone – and would rather not – can still use DarQ, but we will need to run a custom ADB script that grants DarQ specific permissions in order for it to work as expected. It’s actually easier than it sounds. Here’s what you need to do:
- Install ADB on your computer using this package with XDA .
- Connect your Android device to your computer using a USB cable.
- Download and extract the DarQ ADB script from the XDA Forums.
- In the DarQ ADB Script folder, double-click the application for your PC operating system, then wait for the script to run.
After running the ADB script, you can use DarQ – at least until you reboot or turn off your phone. You will need to connect your Android phone to your computer and run the ADB script after every phone reboot.
Using DarQ
Open the DarQ app from your phone’s app screen. On the home screen, there are several options for enabling dark mode for all apps:
- Turn on dark theme: Turn on dark mode at the system level of Android 10.
- Force Dark Theme: Forces all applications to launch a dark theme if available.
- Automatic dark theme: your phone will turn dark mode on / off in all apps at sunrise or sunset.
If you prefer to select specific apps to always start Dark Mode, tap Enable Apps, and then tap the switch next to each app. DarQ will take care of the rest.
You may need to restart already running apps if they don’t automatically switch to dark mode. It is also possible that some applications will launch faster than DarQ can turn on its dark mode; if this happens, try to force close and restart the application. If you have other problems, check out the DarQ FAQ on GitHub.
