How to Reset & Erase Locked IPhone Without Connecting to Mac or PC

iOS 15.2 is packed full of features big and small . Along with features like Digital Legacy and App Privacy Report, there is a feature we’ve been waiting for years; the ability to completely erase and reset a locked iPhone without having to connect it to your Mac or PC first.

This new feature comes in handy if you or someone you know has forgotten your password. If you’ve already tried to enter your passcode a couple of times, your iPhone will lock you for a while and you will see a security lock screen.

In the past, restarting or erasing an iPhone in this position was confusing. If your iPhone was locked, you had to put the iPhone into DFU recovery mode and then restore it via iTunes in Windows or Finder on Mac. However, you should now be able to restart your iPhone by clicking the small Erase iPhone button in the bottom right corner. This also works for iPad and iPod Touch.

There are still restrictions on erasing data from a locked iPhone.

However, for this to work, your device must be connected to Wi-Fi or a cellular network. Also, it is not a free pass to disable Activation Lock. You will still need the Apple ID and password you used to set up your device, so thankfully this is not a free pass to reset a stolen iPhone.

How to Reset or Erase Locked iPhone

The process is pretty straightforward:

  1. Wake up iPhone and enter any password. Once Apple registers your failed request, the Security Lock screen appears. If you don’t see this screen right away, repeat the process a couple of times.
  2. Click the ” Erase iPhone ” button in the lower right corner; press again to confirm.
  3. Enter your Apple ID password to sign out of your Apple ID on iPhone (the one associated with that device).
  4. Click the Erase iPhone button to completely erase your device with all your data and settings.
  5. Give him some time. When your iPhone restarts, it will be completely new.

You can now follow the onscreen instructions to set up your iPhone. We hope you had an iCloud or offline backup so you can restore your data and get started right away.

Also, this time, make sure you really remember the password.

As we mentioned above, for this feature to work, you need to be connected to Wi-Fi or a cellular network. If you cannot do this, you will need to restore iPhone using classic recovery mode on PC or Mac.
