We Make Egg Rolls for Breakfast Because Why Not?
For me, the boundaries between “breakfast”, “lunch” and “supper” have always been blurred. After all, a pastime is a construct made to meet the needs of people, and they differ greatly from culture to culture. The Romans did not eat breakfast , and the British have a complex “tea” system that I have not yet fully mastered. (Based on social media, I think “tea” is the word for “dinner,” but also literally tea served with small sandwiches and cakes. It’s confusing!)
All of this suggests that I am not very concerned with eating the “right” foods at the “right” times, but I am interested in giving almost every meal a breakfast ambiance that is one of the best. The easiest way to make something “ready for breakfast” is to put an egg on top of it, but some things hold eggs better than others.
Noodles, for example, hold eggs well; burgers too. So do – and we knew I would eventually get to – the waffles, thanks to their flat, rough surface. On the other hand, the egg rolls are too round for optimal egg retention, but this is all fixed with quick mixing in a waffle iron.
Could you eat a round egg roll with an egg side? Yes! But you wouldn’t be that perfect, full bite. The waffle roll smoothes and adds texture, making it easy to hold the egg. It also creates those classic waffle mugs that are perfect for storing syrup or a mixture of soy sauce and hot honey (which is what I poured onto mine in the picture above). You can waffle leftover egg rolls or frozen egg rolls. Frozen got me a little more involved, but not by much.
To make a takeaway waffle roll from leftover egg roll, gently squeeze it between the (medium-high) non-stick waffle iron burners until it’s hot and crispy on the outside. This will take about three to four minutes. To make a frozen egg roll waffle roll, place it on the hinge side of the waffle iron and close so that the top plate rests on top of the egg roll. After about a minute, push gently, but do not forcefully close the waffle iron. Repeat about every minute until you can almost close the waffle iron with a light pressure. (This takes about five minutes for one frozen egg roll and 10 minutes for two.) When the egg roll is hot, crispy and flat enough, remove it from the waffle iron, place the fried egg on top and drizzle with 50 L. 50 mixture of soy sauce and honey on top. Eat immediately, at any hour.
