Add Baking Soda to Sangria

Sangria is popular with the crowd, but has a way to disappear before the whole crowd is happy, even if the two-person crowd is COVID-compliant. One way to soften this is to cook more sangria than you think you need (and make it with cheap wine), but you can stretch it even further by serving it with baking soda.

Alton Brown is doing the same thing with Cheerwine , but this shit regional and Cherry Coke everywhere (as Dr. Pepper). Plain Coca-Cola will do too, but then we’ll turn into Kolimocho territory which is good territory but a different drink. (For my southern friends, understand that when I say “coca-cola,” I mean coca-cola, not all carbonated soft drinks.)

Adding sweet soda water to sangria stretches it, but also makes it a little less potent, which is good news if you’re trying to calm a crowd. I understand that “crowds” is not a very hot topic, but even a rowdy couple can benefit from a light libation with a lower strength from time to time.

It’s also delicious. You can slice just about any sangria with baking soda, just make sure you pair the flavors correctly. Cherry Coke works with any red wine based sangria, but do not include sweet and fruity liqueurs if using Dr. White wine and rose sangria go well with citrus sodas and ginger ale, but nothing works with Pepsi because Pepsi is junk. If you want a template, I have it:

Sangria and soda:

Ingredients:

  • 1 bottle of wine with a capacity of 750 ml (I used Malbec).
  • 10 ounces frozen fruit, chopped (I love peaches.)
  • 1 orange, cut into eighths
  • 3 ounces of some brandy (for me it was a pear).
  • 3 ounces of some kind of liquor (it was a peach).
  • Soda (Cherry Coke was perfect for this combination.)

Instructions:

Mix everything except soda in a large jug and refrigerate for four hours, ideally overnight. To serve, fill a glass halfway with the wine mixture (and some wine-soaked fruit) and add an equal amount of baking soda. Eat and repeat until the crowd is happy, even if the crowd is you and your thoughts in the bathtub .
