Simple Daiquiri Is the Best Daiquiri

I don’t know exactly when this happened, but somewhere along the way, the word daiquiri has become a generic term for any sweet rum-containing beverage with some sort of fruity flavor. Many of these sugary-sweet creations are served frozen in large cups. Curls of syrup are sometimes observed. None of them, my friends, compare to a real daiquiri – a strikingly simple drink made from only rum, lime and simple syrup.

Looking at the ingredient list, you may notice that daiquiri is a simple, sour rum-based beverage . You may also notice that the proportions are slightly different from what I usually recommend for sour beers, with full ounces of syrup and citrus fruits rather than the standard 3/4 ounce. This is, of course, a matter of preference. You should try both ratios and see which one you like best.

Once you’ve mastered the classic version, you can skip the rum (I like this pineapple one ), try a richer syrup made with turbinado sugar, or replace the syrup with liqueur . But try the original before messing with any of this. This is a true classic for many reasons.

To make it you will need:

  • 2 ounces light rum
  • 30 g fresh lime juice
  • 30 grams of simple syrup

Pour everything into a shaker with ice (or one large cube) and shake vigorously until cold enough. Strain into a glass compartment and enjoy.
