Whatever your company’s policy on free time, you deserve to make the most of it. But you need to plan ahead and set vacation dates. Otherwise, that long-awaited long weekend has a way of sneaking up on you and passing you by, just like every other run-of-the-mill, miserable two-day weekend. Here are the dates you need to know to extend your free time by taking advantage of the 2024 long weekend.

Federal holidays recognized in 2024

When planning a holiday in the new year, the best way to maximize your free time is to always request days around an existing long weekend. And you should now mark your calendar for the major holidays and long weekends in 2024. After all, the earlier in the year you request contiguous PTO days off, the more likely it is that your request will be approved.

Here’s your full list of guaranteed or potential long weekends in 2024, and what it looks like when you strategically request one day of vacation to get a four-day weekend.

    • Takeoff: January 2 (Tuesday)

  • Monday, January 15 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day)

    • Departure: January 12 (Friday)

  • Monday, February 19 (President’s Day)

    • Departure: February 16 (Friday)

  • Monday, May 27 (Remembrance Day)

    • Takeoff: May 24 (Friday)

  • Thursday, July 4th (Independence Day)

    • Takeoff: July 5 (Friday)

  • Monday, September 2 (Labor Day)

    • Departure: August 30 (Friday)

  • Monday, October 14 (Indigenous Peoples’ Day)

    • Takeoff: October 11 (Friday)

  • Monday, November 11 (Veterans Day)

    • Departure: November 8 (Friday)

  • Thursday, November 28 (Thanksgiving Day)

    • Departure: November 29 (Friday) (If Friday is already a day off for you, take off the following Monday)

  • Wednesday, December 25th (Christmas Day)

    • Takeoff: December 23 – December. 27 (Monday to Friday), using four-day PTO to get nine days off in a row.
