How to Keep Your Home Cool Without Air Conditioning

It’s that time of year: you put sweaters in a box under your bed, window air conditioners reappear all over the area, and you notice that the trash has started to smell awful. Yes, it’s almost summer now, which means we’ll be launching our cooling systems soon, leading to higher electricity bills and widespread energy consumption. Instead, try these tips to keep yourself and your home cool without resorting to air conditioning.

This may sound intuitive, but be sure to keep your curtains or drapes closed on hot days. If you don’t already have them, this is also a great time to go for darker shades that will help you sleep easier and keep you warm. As a substitute for a DIY air conditioner, try placing a bowl of ice in front of a fan that blows cold air. You can also improve air circulation by turning on bathroom fans – they not only filter out unpleasant odors, but also help remove hot air.

As the hot air rises upward, move the mattress to the floor; it will be cooler there than on your bed frame. Use cotton sheets that wick away heat and moisture while you sleep. And this probably goes without saying, but put the winter blanket in storage.
