These Subaru SUVs Need to Be Parked Outside Before They Catch Fire

Cars that catch fire seem to be on trend this year, with Ford and Ram Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) being recalled in November and Kia SUVs in October. Now Subaru is joining the group with their latest SUV recall. Subaru of America Inc. announced a recall of some Subaru Ascent SUVs due to potential fire hazards related to manufacturing issues.

The recall became official after the company received two separate reports of an SUV fire. There were no reports of casualties in the incidents.

What is a Subaru Ascent recall?

According to Subaru’s official recall statement , there was a bolt that may have been tightened incorrectly during production. The bolt secures the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) heater ground lug, which, if not properly fastened, can melt the ground lug and other components, resulting in a fire hazard when the PTC heater is operating.

Which Subaru SUVs are being recalled?

Subaru is recalling models next year and encouraging them to park outdoors away from items that could catch fire:

  • Subaru Climb 2019
  • Subaru Climb 2020
  • Subaru Climb 2021
  • Subaru Climb 2022

What to do if your Subaru Ascent is recalled?

Until inspections and repairs are completed, Subaru advises customers not to leave the SUV unattended while driving, park the vehicle outdoors, and be mindful of where they choose to park it. If any owner smells or sees smoke coming from the dashboard or driver’s footwell, Subaru recommends that the ignition be turned off immediately and seek assistance from the Subaru roadside assistance program or the nearest Subaru dealer.

Subaru will replace the PTC heater ground bolts and replace the ground wire and connector holder if they deem it necessary (they estimate that 0.6% of recalled vehicles will require replacement). Inspection and repair will be free for owners.

Subaru owners can expect formal recall notice within 60 days of the notice, or by February 9, 2023. review. If you need more information about a recall, you can call the Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm ET.
