Don’t Eat This Recalled Salmon, FDA Says
There have been several salmon recalls over the past few months. Earlier this year, St. James Smokehouse voluntarily recalled 93 packs of Scottish Smoked Salmon from the Scottish Reserve in 10 states due to possible Listeria contamination . Then last month, the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched an investigation into a salmonella outbreak linked to raw salmon supplied to restaurants in California and Arizona.
Which salmon has been recalled?
The full name of the product is Giant Private Label Wild Caught Alaskan Sockeye Smoked Salmon and the refrigerated 4 0z packs are being recalled. The salmon has a cardboard envelope with a window – this is the picture of the salmon from the FDA. Only UPC code 68826715832 from batch number R4132 (listed on the clear plastic bag of fish) is subject to the recall. The fish was distributed by Giant Food in Maryland, Virginia, Washington, and Delaware.
Why remembered?
During a routine regulatory health safety check by the Maryland Department of Health, inspectors found the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause serious and fatal infections in young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised people. It is known that generally healthy people suffer from other non-fatal but severe symptoms. The FDA is continuing its investigation with the company to find the cause of the problem, but there are no reports of illnesses yet.
What to do if you bought a recalled salmon
If you bought salmon, the FDA recommends that you throw it away or return it to the grocery store for a full refund. You should also sanitize the refrigerator and any countertops that the fish have come into contact with.
