Oliver Stone’s Wall Street gave us the iconic and chronically misused “greed is good” adage, but movies usually like to show us otherwise. History is definitely full of films in which greedy characters get what is due to them – whose greed is punished in one way or another. Real life is usually much more complicated. American capitalism is particularly well-suited to pumping money from the poor to the already very rich, who then set aside a statistically insignificant portion of that wealth to lobby politicians for favorable tax laws, repeal of pesky rules, and destruction of labor unions that could give the working class more leverage. . If greed is not good, it certainly seems profitable. I suppose we can hope they at least feel a little bad about it, soaking in bathtubs full of Dom PĂ©rignon and wiping their asses with Prada bags (I don’t know any rich person; I guess they do). As Mr. Bernstein of Citizen Kane so succinctly puts it: “… making a lot of money is no problem… if all you want to do is make a lot of money.” Perhaps we can take some comfort in the fact that having a lot of money doesn’t make a person particularly interesting.
