Follow These Simple Guidelines to Keep Your Pets From Getting Sick.
As much as you love your pets, there is still a possibility that they can make you nauseous if you are not careful. A recent study explains the potential health risks of owning pets – especially for people with weak immune systems – and how they can be easily avoided.
A study by Ohio State University and published in the April issue of the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that there are at least 20 different diseases that humans transmit from common pets. Transmitted bacteria include Campylobacter from cats and dogs and Salmonella from amphibians, reptiles, rodents and young poultry. There are even parasites that can jump too. Fortunately, there are some easy ways to keep your furry, feathered, and scaly friends from getting sick:
- If you have a weak immune system, ask your doctor if your pets are okay. They don’t always ask , so let them know. It is best to avoid contact with high-risk pets such as reptiles, amphibians and other exotic animals.
- Wear protective gloves when cleaning aquariums, cages, bedding, feeding areas, and when cleaning faeces. Be sure to regularly clean and disinfect these areas.
- Discourage pets from licking their faces and wash their hands before eating.
- Keep litter bins away from eating and preparing areas and cover litter bins in the playground when not in use.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, remember to regularly show your pets to the vet for check-ups and injections. The risk of getting sick is much higher in people with weaker immune systems, but anyone can get sick. Your animals are definitely not sick monsters, it’s just important to do the little things to keep everyone healthy. Follow the link below to find out more.
