Turn a Light Bulb Into an Oil Lamp, Corkscrew, or Sunlight

Most of us are slowly but surely getting rid of old incandescent bulbs and replacing them with LEDs and CFLs if we haven’t already. If you have a few of those old light bulbs still lying around and need to use them, or one of them finally dies, Instructables user ShakeTheFuture has a variety of ways to change their purpose besides throwing them away.

The video above tells a story, but all five different light bulb projects in the guide start off by gently opening the light bulb and squeezing it out so you can use it as a vessel for something else. The process is actually a lot easier than you might think considering how fragile light bulbs can be, but once your light bulb is hollowed out from the bottom, it can be filled with other items.

If you don’t want to do anything after you hollow it out, ShakeTheFuture suggests using it as a fun desk accessory while holding paper clips – the weight of the clips will hold the light bulb, and when you need it you can simply shake it. … If you want the courage, blue the washer with high temperature sealant to the top, fill it with lamp oil (paraffin base will do) and insert the wick, and you’ve got an oil lamp that you can refill whenever you want. You can even attach an LED solar garden light to the base and turn it into a solar lamp.

The best way is to hollow out the light bulb, fill it with Instamorph and toss it into the oven. When the instamorph melts, remove it from the oven, add more until it is full, and repeat the process until it is completely melted instamorph. When this happens, let it cool down a bit, insert the corkscrew worm, and then let the instamorph cool down until you can easily deal with it. Break off the glass from the flask and you have a flask-shaped corkscrew. Click on the link below for step-by-step instructions on all of this – we’re cutting down on space, but the videos above and the photos below will help you get started.
