How I Failed Chair Traverse and You Can Too

Instagram covers the exercise craze: chair traverse . It only takes a minute and the only equipment you need is a simple chair. The downside is that it’s basically impossible, but that’s okay. It’s silly and fun. I tried it and it didn’t work and you can too.

To make a chair traverse, you will start by sitting in a chair. It should be such that there are no bars between your legs, unless, of course, you are very thin. Then you simply crawl under the chair and sit back on the seat without touching the ground. How difficult can it be? Erica Cook of the American Ninja Warrior Contest can do it . Climberscan do this in between other training exercises, such as fingertip pull-ups. Of course, I thought, I can do it.

I crawled under the chair without falling on my head. I kept my feet on the seat of the chair as I reached for the back of the chair, trying to climb up. The problem is, if I lifted my legs off the seat, I would fall to the ground.

I ended up failing because I couldn’t think of a way to get around this issue. The chair traverse is not only an exercise, but a puzzle, like climbing itself. If I had a steel abs, I might be able to hold my legs with simple muscles. If I had been more agile, I might have hooked my knee on the leg of the chair. Also, if I could levitate it would help too.
