Old Towels Are the Best Material for Cheap DIY Sound Absorbing Panels
If you want to create a quiet recording environment without breaking your budget, you may need a stack of old towels.
In this YouTube video from DIY Perks, Matt Perks tests the sound absorption of cheap, easy-to-find materials. Perks tested a thin flat sponge, an egg sponge, two layers of an egg sponge, a seat cushion and a folded towel with a frequency spread of 17, 13, 10, 7 and 5 kHz. Overall, Perks found that a folded towel, four or twelve layers thick, absorbed the most frequencies. Best of all, you can buy a bunch of old towels from thrift stores for just a few dollars. If you want to create your own sound absorbing panels, Perks will show you how in the second half of the video above.
