Two Introductory Essay Tips From a Person Who Enrolled in Every Ivy League School
Going to Ivy League University is a great achievement for most people. Kwasi Yenin has been accepted into all eight schools, so if there is anyone who knows a thing or two about writing a good introductory essay, this is him.
Yes, it’s important to proofread your essays and make a lot of revisions, but winning essays is about more than grammar. Here’s what Yenin recommended to high school students in a recent “Ask Me Anything” Reddit article :
- Get help from your English teacher: start early! For example, in the summer before the graduation year, if possible. This way, your English teacher will learn it and work with you throughout the year to improve it. Plus, when it’s time to apply, you’ll be more than ready.
- Make your essay scream, “This is who I am!”: You want your essay to be compelling and stand out from others, but you also want it to reflect who you really are. Yenin invites you to take a small idea or event in your life, and then describe in detail its meaning for you. By the end of your essay, anyone reviewing it should have a good understanding of you.
“It’s also a good idea to avoid cliches,” Yenin says. Remember, these essays are an opportunity to showcase who you are and what makes you special. Think about what makes you unique as a student and as a person, and then put that on a page. You can read the entire AMA at the link below.
