Avoid the “perfectionist Trap” and Stop Comparing Your Performance to Your Role Models

The Perfectionist Trap occurs when you see the success of the people you look up to and strive for it, forgetting (or not seeing) the hard work and setbacks required to achieve them. You try and fight and think you have to give up. Don’t: they are more like you than you think.

The video above describes how seeing the successful end results of the craftsmen, but not all of their past imperfect projects or other failures, forces us to compare ourselves to an impossible standard . The best way to break out of this mental trap is to remember to watch the failures of those who inspire you. Most famous artists, musicians, and even business people have interviews and books about their journey to where they’ve been, often including moments when things weren’t going well for them . By studying their failures, you can even learn how to recuperate when things go wrong for you. Remember, everyone has to start somewhere, no matter how talented or successful they seem today.
