Taxi Tips for Popular Travel Destinations Around the World
There are more difficult things in life than catching a taxi, but depending on the city, it can be a little confusing. Travel + Leisure offers some tips for using a taxi depending on the destination.
Contrary to what you believe in the movies, it is quite possible for tourists to catch a taxi in New York. However, there is a trick that can help out-of-town people. Travel + Leisure explains:
Find a taxi with the right light on its roof. In particular, you want only the center number to light up and nothing else. If none of the lights are on, it’s already busy, and if all of the lights are on, it’s probably off-duty, but you can still try calling out.
In London, you will see the TAXI sign illuminate to indicate that a taxi is available. No light, no accessibility. In Tokyo, a green light means the taxi is already taken, so look for a red light and it is Japanese kanji for empty car.
If you are taking a taxi in Mexico City, Travel + Leisure recommends ordering it directly at your hotel. The hotel can also book a tourist taxi for you, which will pick you up, then wait at your destination and drive you back to your hotel. If you are going to hail a taxi yourself, they suggest taking it from the taxi rank.
