Rest of the Day: Microsoft Makes It Easy to Move From Mac to Surface
Microsoft wants to entice Apple users by making it easier to jump ship. They especially think that Apple fans might love their high-performance Surface devices, which have a similarly pleasing design.
- Microsoft’s new Mac to Surface Assistant creates a zip file with all of your data so you can simply dump it to your new device. (There’s really no reason this tool is specifically for Surface devices, so you can probably use it when migrating to any PC.) [Microsoft via The Verge ]
- In other news, YouTube has been caught hiding innocent LGBT videos. There is a “restricted mode” that is usually meant for parents to allow their children to browse the site without encountering anything overly offensive, but some LGBT users found that their videos were not visible despite being completely harmless. YouTube initially responded that only videos that discussed “sensitive issues” were not visible, but they have since admitted that the videos were mislabeled. [Gizmodo]
- A major airline in the Middle East has apparently banned the use of all electronic devices on flights to and from the United States. Royal Jordanian Airways tweeted that only cell phones and medical devices will be allowed “in accordance with the instructions of the relevant US departments,” but they have since deleted the tweet. Some say 12 airlines will be affected , although the news has yet to be confirmed. [Twitter]
- Super Mario Run will be available on Android on March 23rd. Good game! Although I only played it for a couple of weeks before I finished all the levels, I think it costs ten bucks. [Nintendo]
- There is an open source GameBoy emulator for the Apple Watch. This is just a proof-of-concept for now until performance and controls are improved, but it’s a charming idea. Mostly I miss my old Tetris clock . [9to5Mac]
- For a limited time, AT&T is including HBO in its more expensive channel packages on DirecTV Now. This is usually a $ 5 supplement, but if you sign up before March 30th, you get it for free – if you buy their plan for $ 60 or $ 70 a month. [AT&T]
