Turn an Old Sweater Into Pants for Your Little One
Children are sloppy, so spending on expensive clothing or spare parts can add up. If you make your kid’s clothes out of old adult clothes, you can save money and not worry about them messing up their clothes while playing. Here’s how to transform an adult sweater or sweatshirt into toddler pants.
You will need a 100% wool sweater or sweatshirt, an elastic band, a sewing machine, and a pair of pants to use as a sewing pattern (if your child has already ruined a pair of pants, they can come in handy as a template). Cut off the sleeves of the sweater, or if it is wool, “feel” it by washing in hot water to wrinkle it. Fold the pants in half and tuck them over one sleeve, making sure the waist is wide enough for your little one. Allow a seam allowance when trimming the side of the sleeve that will be on the inside leg of the pants. Cut a second leg on the other sleeve.
Turn one leg with the wrong side out, and place the other in so that the right sides are together. Pin the seam along the inseam and sew. Patch the waistband and thread the elastic. We look at the rubber bands together and close the casing. Follow the link below to view a step-by-step visual guide.
